According to “Brake”, the road safety charity, runaway wheels kill 8 to 10 people and injure many more each year in the UK.
Naturally, as a torque solutions provider and torque tool manufacturer this is very concerning and our fear is that the issue is not given its due attention by the road haulage and public service vehicle industries where speed and low cost often seem to be the most important factors in wheel bolting.
It’s very important that maintenance engineers know that wheel nut movement indicators and nut locking devices are no substitute for good bolting practice, including the correct application of torque to wheel bolts.
Plastic wheel nut movement indicators can be applied to commercial vehicles, such as articulated lorries and buses, to indicate movement in the wheel nut. Many commercial vehicle users also apply nut locking devices which link two or more adjacent nuts in such a way as to prevent them from undoing.
Wheel nut movement indicators are ...

Opening and closing water valves can be very difficult due to the amount of pressure behind them and rusting of the mechanism.
The previous method for completing this task required the use of a large stilson wrench. Due to size of the valve, pressure on the gate, or scale on the components, the torque required to actuate the valve by hand was unsafe and could potentially cause long term injuries due to excessive physical actvity. The previous method was also time consuming due to the limited space for operation of the stilson wrench.
The solution is to utilise the Norbar CTM-72-1250 Valve Actuation Tool and a custom designed reaction arm/assembly to safely actuate the valve.
The Norbar CTM-72-1250 Valve Actuation Tool has a 3 speed concept that delivers the benefit of fast run down speeds when minimal load is required when actuating the valve and low speed high torque setting to assist when loads are high. The CTM-72-1250’s operation is quiet, less than 70dB (A) w ...
For the many of you who probably don’t know, Norbar is a family owned and run business. Whilst in 2012 we have quite the global reach, we did have more humble beginnings. How does that phrase go again? “You don’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been”? Well, here’s a potted history of our life so far…
In 1942, at the height of World War 2, Bill Brodey was engaged in selling various tools and machines including Joseph Sunnen honing machines used for honing cylinder bores of engines. Torque wrenches were already being imported and sold alongside the honing so it was smart business sense (supply and demand) when Bill and his friend Ernest Thornitt applied to the UK Ministry of Supply requesting permission to manufacture torque wrenches in the UK.
Torque wrenches were very much in demand for the manufacture of Rolls Royce Merlin aero engines and the UK Government was keen to manufacture in the UK wherever possible to reduce pressure on t ...
Norbar has devised easy-to-use online calculators that support the correct application of torque in three key areas:
