Ultrasonic Bolt Measurement

Ultrasonic measurement provides a very precise method of determining the elongation of a fastener due to tightening. This elongation is proportional to the load force generated by the fastener.

The basic principle behind this method of tension control is similar to sonar. The ultrasonic measurement of bolt tension is achieved by introducing a sonic pulse at one end of the fastener and accurately measuring the time of flight (TOF) required for the echo to return from the opposite end.

MagneticTransducers are used with magnetic alloys, and consist of a rare earth magnet surrounding a piezo electric crystal which is protected by a wear plate. The diameter used in the description of transducers refers to the nominal diameter of the piezo electric crystal; therefore, the O.D. of a transducer is larger than the crystal diameter due to the annular magnet and transducer housing. Standard transducers can be used on application with contact temperatures of up to 54°C (130°F). Hi-Temp transducers are available for applications with contact temperatures of up to 175°C (350°F). Special transducers are available for non-magnetic applications.
